Book Review: Faults in our Stars

Now a days it is a tragedy that everyone of us have someone in family or friends who has or gone through cancer. It is one of the dangerous disease. Written by John Green, ‘Faults in our star’ is book on those people who are suffering from cancer. The story doesn’t talk about the disease or even about suffering from cancer in detail. It talks about how the main characters, Hazel Grace and Augustus Walter, despite having cancer, live their life and try as much as possible to be normal.

The main character, Hazel Grace, is suffering from lung cancer and is on experiment drug which has increase her life span. She visits a support group where people with cancer come together and share their experiences and grief. In the group, she meet Augustus Walter and Isaac. Augustus (Gus) was suffering from cancer but he is cured whereas Isaac is about to lose his eye sight because of it. The story evolves around the love story of Hazel Grace and Gus and their common interest – a book ‘An Imperial Affliction’ written by Van Houten. Since Hazel is big fan of Mr. Van Houten, Gus tried to get in touch with the author so that Hazel gets a chance to ask him to questions pertaining to book and it’s ending. They laugh, they cry, they support each other, they face the disease together and they live as much as they can in the world.

It is indeed an emotional story. Those who has seen people suffering from cancer will be able to connect more. Nevertheless people who have not seen cancer patient will also feel strong emotion after reading the book. John Green has written the story in simple yet effective words. The characters are not just patients but also the people who just need more time on earth. The book is not about cancer or cancer patient, it is about love and care.

It is said that you start valuing something more when you are about to lose or already lost it. The life which is a feeble thing, sometime we forget how precious it is. Those who are not suffering from fatal disease will not understand the value of life as much as those who are only counting days. The books on such topic or even movies inspire us to respect life and push us to make the most of it. Future is not know to all but what can be know or make most of it is – Present.

Personally since I have seen someone close suffering from cancer, I have associated more with the book. It might have triggered my inclination or liking towards the book. But one thing is sure, the language and story of book is simple and cater to all kinda people. Lastly, it’s much better than those typical love stories which has no substance.

Read it not to know the disease, but to know the suffering of those who has or are going through the disease.

Death is not end but dying without living is..!
