Book Review: Dork – The Incredible Adventures of Robin ‘Einstein’ Varghese
So
there is American version of ‘Dork Diaries’ which involve Wimpy Kid and there
is Indian version of ‘Dork’ created by Sidin Vadukut. The earlier one is for
kids and later is for adult. But when it comes to story and humour, I think
Indian Dork is far behind the American Dork. I picked up this book from a
family friend and thought, ‘After disappointing books by many Indian Author (especially
those who are pass out from IIM & IIT’s) let’s give Sidin Vadukut a chance
to impress. I was not aware of his status as a blog writer and neither his
background. But after 2 pages into the story and I knew he must be IIM or IIT
grad. I must say Indian education board needs to add an extra campus course in
these colleges about ‘Book Writing’ & ‘Story Development’.

Dork TIAOREV (Too big name to write) is yet
another boring story of Robin ‘Einstein’ (dunno why in the hell he is named Einstein with no
story or connection to the name or character) Varghese, an average MBA cum
engineering student who got a job with a mid-size management consultancy firm
name ‘Dufresne Partners’. The book is basically Robin’s Diary entry where he
explains how his day went to the Diary. In Robin’s mind, he is this university
top student who knows everything about anything, self-absorbed, highly
delusional character, thinks that he would have got job from Goldman Sachs or McKinsey
and Co if he didn’t say yes to Dufresne (where in reality Dufresne was only one
to offer him the job because no one else applied for them). Anyways moving on
to the story, after getting the job the story is about his experience into
consulting firm, office gossip, politics, bosses, screw ups, not so funny drunken
mistakes, little bit of love interest and big talks about how awesome this Dork
is (in reality he is just a jerk who knows nothing about anything). Since it is
a diary entry, there character or situation is not explained in detail neither
the story.

Personally
I didn’t have any expectations from the book, still it was very disappointing. I
don’t understand why individuals from IIM & IIT don’t have any imagination
when it comes to story writing. All they write is about their college
experience or their personal life cases. If I had to talk about my life
experiences then my diary entries are more interesting than these books (Gosh,
I should approach some publishing house now). Just because they did their MBA
from IIM doesn’t make them good author. I was never a fan of Chetan Bhagat or
Rashmi Bansal nor am I of Sidin Vadukut. The book has nothing new to offer, it
was selling on humour note but frankly I didn’t smile or laugh on any of the
diary entry. Maybe the story of Dork might not be author’s personal experience
but it is also not an interesting story created by mind or imagination. In the
end, the main character was more of an irritating person than a hero. I must
say though, the way book has ended, the writer did use some imagination there.
It was ridiculous and totally unbelievable. The book should be named ‘Dork –
The Absurd Adventure of Robin ‘Stupid’ Varghese’ or maybe ‘Diary of Robin Varghese
– An Egocentric Dork’. They say there are 2 more book to the Dork series but
god please I am not going to read them.
Indian’s were good in literature, dunno what happened to us. I am solemnly swear that I will never ever read any book written by IIM or IIT grad, no offence but story is not just for me (I will only read them if I am getting paid for reading :P).
