Book Review: Connect the Dots

Connect the Dots ..  Chance to connect to different stories

What you do
when you are jobless sitting at home, thinking, what next? How about starting a
business? Or shall I look for interesting job? With these thoughts in mind, I
read ‘Connect the Dots’ by Rashmi Bansal, the author who wrote famous book
‘Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish’. Though I haven’t read her earlier book, I was
inquisitive to read this book. The book showcase 20 inspiring stories of people
who are successful in their respective business without having any format
training in business.

The stories
are divided into 3 sections, Jugaad, Junoon and Zubaan. These stories include
businesses like Su-kam, Reva – Electric Car, Haathichaan paper, Tantra
T-shirts, Shakti Sudha and so on. The author has interviewed the entrepreneurs
and briefly mentioned their success story of the business and their struggle.
Whether it is raid by income tax department or no support by franchisees, these
people have shown the courage to overtake these problems and come out as
aspiring entrepreneurs. These stories are indeed inspiring and some of us will
be triggered by the emotion of doing something different, something which will
help us earn more money.

The book
encouraged at some point but somewhere it sounded too positive. The author has
chosen to highlight only positive side and somewhere shown little bit negative.
Also the book says that these people don’t have any formal training in business
but many entrepreneurs are IIT’ians. Every year 5 lakh people appear for the
entrance exams and only 5000 people get selected for IIT. This in itself says
that few of the entrepreneurs are well educated and book smart. Some stories
sound sheer luck stories. A south Indian guy happens to meet south Indian
people along his path.

Author has
not put much of an effort in writing the book. Now doubt she has visited 20
people personally and interviewed them. But there is no personal take on
stories or her thoughts portrayed on the stories. Those stories are exciting and
it moves us, in many ways it also reflect unconstructive take on our education
system. People are getting degree because of family pressure or just to get a
graduate stamp but our education in school and college is not helping them in
anyway. The training an individual is getting is purely based on experience and
inner motivation. That inner motivation can also be for earning extra money.

Doing a
business requires effort and drive. It is easier said than done. There may come
time when you will rethink on your decision. Drive for business can be anything
but it does bring a different joy. At the same time, working for someone is
also as difficult as having your own business. There are some companies who allow
you to use your imagination and pursue what you believe. In the end, it is a
person’s wishes and desire to pursue his/her career.

Connect the dots and create your own
future.
