Book Review: And the Mountains Echoed

And the Mountains Echoed.. we can hear it loud and clear!!!

After 2 successful books i had to read 3rd
book, And the Mountains Echoed by Afghan writer Khaled Hosseini. I was in love
with ‘Kite Runner’ and also liked ‘Thousand Splendid Suns’. But somehow i am
not in love with this book. No doubt i liked the book. It has amazing story and
Mr. Hosseini has an art to keep a secret in a book which is revealed to the
reader only when he/she keeps on reading.

The description of the books says that it is a story
of inseparable brother and sister (Abdullah and Pari) who travel to Kabul with
their father, unknown to the fact and suspense that unfolds in Kabul (for that
you have to read the book). The story is not just about brother and sister duo.
The books talks about all the other characters and their background. Father, Mother
and Uncle of Abdullah and Pari, Dr. Markos, Mr. And Mrs. Wahdati and step
brother Iqbal are few to mention.
This book is not like previous 2 books, here the story
is moving from past to future to present to future to past again. There is no
fix start and end. It starts with some character; goes to another then
introduce another character and back to reveal the secret of previous character’s
background story. This might sound confusing to you and thats what i thought
when i started reading this book. Since i am very bad with names i used to go
back and read again and then proceed with the story. Once you finish around
15-20% of the book, you will get the idea about the story. The story is not
just about Afghanistan, unlike his previous books where characters have faced
the turmoil of the situation in the country, in this book the characters are
very little affected with the situation or rather i should say they are
affected in some way but not mentioned in detail. The book covers around 60-70
years where kids grow old and their kids grow up too. It takes readers from
Afghanistan to Paris to United States to small town name Tinos and more.
Mr. Hosseini has written ‘And the mountains echoed’
so differently that i cant even think of explaining the story in this blog. The
only drawback i felt with this book is that lot of stories are left loose, some
characters enter and they are left in between. The way story goes back and
forth with different character leads to loss of interest.

The stories talk about relationship, hardship, love
and unfortunate situations which changes our entire life. Sometime our own
actions makes us regret our present, sometime our regret from past leads to
sadness in our present and many a times a dream of better future might not be
the answer to our hearts emptiness. People will enter our life and goes back
but few of them leave behind theirs prints for lifetime. We might not remember
them but their prints will be part of our life and it will be written in the
book of our life’s event. The book explores the love in varied relationship whether
its brother and sister, boss and servant or mother and daughter. Relationship filled
with love is true relationship.
