Book Review: The Zahir

After
‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho, ‘The Zahir’ was my second book. The book is
written from the point of view of unnamed celebrity author who talks about his
life and his search and his Zahir, a blinding obsession, in the book.

The
author lives in Paris with his wife Esther, a war correspondent. His life is turned
upside down when he finds out that his wife is missing. 2 years goes and there
is still no sign of Esther. The unanswered questions and unknown reason of
disappearance leads to pain and suffering. Author to release his pain and
writes a book about love. This book brings Mikhail, a young boy from Kazakhstan,
to meet the author who helps him with the whereabouts of his wife. The book
talks about how he rediscovers himself, the energy of love and also falls in
love with French actress.
There
are various talks between Esther and author which are thought provoking. The topics
triggering my brain waves were about happiness and sadness in people’s eye. How
a daily life though we are satisfied, is still leads to some sad and unaware
feeling inside. The search to find one’s self which neither money nor fame can bring.
Mikhail, a young boy whose mission is to spread energy of love takes author to
various gathering where he helps him feel the energy of love and embrace freedom.
The experience also takes author to go in the past and pinpoint the time where
things went wrong between him and his wife and how everything lead to suffering
and pain. Later in the book, author goes to Kazakhstan to get back his wife or at
least get answer to his unanswered questions.
The book
is as simple as Alchemist. The stories mentioned in book like that of 2
fireman, and a boy buying 5 apple is good reference. The message is somewhat
clear but it is also debatable like beggars are happy than other people, people
who live life in war live the life fully and so on. Even with minor flaws, book
is worth reading. It makes us think and analyse our life and how we are living
it.
The
strong message in the book is about ‘Energy of love’. In today’s busy life,
people have forgotten to love and most importantly keeping our loved ones happy
and at peace. Many problems are solved by simple conversation but we seldom do
that. People want to be heard and not giving that chance suffocates them. To get
away from this suffocation, we either run away or die.
Look
inside and you might find your own Zahir. Let go of Zahir and live the happy life.
