Book Review: Verity by Colleen Hoover

“Verity” is a suspense and mystery novel by Colleen Hoover. I read my first book by this author and am now sharing Scribbled Canvas’s Book Review of Verity by Colleen Hoover. My friend pointed out that Colleen Hoover has a reputation for writing romance novels, and this book represents her first foray into the suspense and thriller genre.

Plot:

Verity book is from the perspective of Lowen, a struggling writer who is offered the opportunity to complete the remaining books in a successful series written by the critically injured bestselling author, Verity Crawford. Jeremy Crawford, Verity’s husband, is struggling through the loss of their twin girls and his injured wife. Lowen accepts the job and moves to the Crawford residence to sort through Verity’s notes. As Lowen digs into Verity’s notes, she uncovers something very dark and disturbing. The lines become blurred between truth and fiction as Lowen reads through the autobiography of Verity written by her. The novel uncovers the past of the Crawfords and their love life. The story unfolds with twists and turns, leaving readers questioning the true story of what happened.

Scribbled Canvas’s Take:

The start of the novel was interesting as you wonder how everything happened. Reader are eager to know the reason for the death of the twin girls and the incident involving Verity. As the story grows, the novel becomes a bit erotic, making me wonder whether this was a suspense novel or a romance/erotic novel. The writing style clearly shows that this is new territory for the writer. It doesn’t come across as a typical suspense novel. There are too many extensions in the story that don’t add any value. It delve too much into the personal life between Verity and Jeremy. Even the character of Lowen is very naive and weak. In the middle, it becomes boring only to pick up in the end at a fast-forward pace. The story becomes predictable and takes a turn later to add that extra layer of suspense.

Compared to fictional and suspense novels, this was a pretty easy read with little suspense. The story is not deep and covers just the top layer. If you’re not into suspense novels and want an easy read to introduce a new genre into your reading, then go for Verity by Colleen Hoover.
