Faces of Darkness
We
all have dark side; some might show it, some will hide it with what appears to
be pretty side. But what this darkness is? What this darkness is all about? I came
across this thought when I saw the episode of a high school series name ‘One
Tree Hill’. The show is about high school and different types of people living
their life. This particular episode is about a boy who is treated as nothing in
the school. He is neither acknowledged nor been part of any group. He is no one
in high school and he gets tired of being treated like this. He quotes, “It always
hurts and hurts every single day.” In four year of high school, very few people
actually spoke to him. He took many anti-depressant tablets and didn’t come to
school for 2 weeks and no one realised. This episode is one of the finest episode
and it makes us wonder about our past life in school/college.

When
I look back or even now, I can associate with the character of the boy. Many of
us go through a phase where either we are popular or we try to fit into the
crowed or try to make other people notice us. How many of us actually spoke to
many people in our school days. We are bound to be part of small groups and we
like being associated with them. We don’t notice or talk to people outside of
our comfort zone. Just like the episode we might have ignored many of such
students. In some cases, few of us have actually felt ignorant and outcaste
during our school/college days. We attend class but no one notice us; we like
someone and they don’t even know us; we try to be part of group but group
reject us; there are many such stories and this experience is what makes us. These
experiences give birth to faces of darkness.

Life
in school or even college is difficult. It is like a war where we entered but
we don’t know who our enemy is. We create our own foe and friends. What make
that life smooth is support of friends and people who really care about us. Now
imagine being in a war and be nothing, no one give shit about you; it feels
like you are in war against everyone. The days where we feel we are nothing, no
one care for us, people don’t talk to you or even look at you, the feeling of negligent;
it’s lonely out there and loneliness give birth
to hatred and anger. And we try and try to adjust & embrace the good
side but it will keep on hurting, keep on getting darker till the time you stop
the pain. Till you tell yourself – You are not the loser, nothing is wrong with
you. This darkness is just a phase of life. Once you are in dark, it will be
difficult for you to come out. At that point in your life, support of family
and friends will help you overcome the dark side.

We
say that we have 500 friends on our Facebook, but do all 500 care about you or
meet you. We say we chat with 30 people on Whats app and we are part of 10
groups, but do they all really care about what you go through or take time out
from their busy schedule to meet you. These ‘so called’ friends are not friends;
they are acquaintance or convenient friend. The real friendship stays beyond those
school, college or office days. People who take time out from their busy
schedule to spend time with you are real friends. Technology may make the
regular communication easy but it can’t be replaced by personal meeting. Another
thing which friendship requires is that it is not bounded by some set of rules
which you decide in your mind. The crust of friendship is dependent on trust
and faith in one another.

Life
can be difficult but people can make it easy for you. Similarly some people
will also make it difficult for you. Our darkness is not just with our own life;
the darkness has face of jealousy and comparison. Ultimately it is upon us how
we want to embrace this darkness. It can consume us or it can set us free from
pretending. Our choice, our action will give shape to this darkness. Lastly,
true value of friend will not be known in good time, but when time is bad, you
will know who your true friend is.

Does this darkness have a name? This cruelty, this
hatred, how did it find us? Did it steal into our lives, or did we seek it out
and embrace it? What happened to us? That we now send our children into the
world like we send young men to war Hoping for their safe return, But knowing
that some will be lost along the way. When did we lose our way? Consumed by the shadows,
swallowed whole by the darkness.Does this darkness have a name? Is it your name?—– One Tree Hill
